Weighted Grade Calculator
Calculate your overall class grade using weighted categories. Leave one grade blank to find out what score you need on that final category (like a final exam) to reach your target.
This guide-style calculator is tuned for the query 'calculating grades by weight': it shows the formula, warns when weights do not total 100%, and explains what score is needed in one remaining category.

How Weighted Grades are Calculated
To calculate a weighted grade, multiply each category grade by its percentage weight (expressed as a decimal). Add all these weighted scores together. If the weights do not add up to 100%, the sum is divided by the total weight. Formula: Overall Grade = Sum of (Grade × Weight) ÷ Sum of Weights.
Example Weighted Grade Calculation
Suppose your course syllabus outlines the following weighted grading categories: Homework (20%), Midterm (30%), and a Final Exam (50%). You earned the following:
| Category | Weight | Grade | Weighted Contribution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Homework | 20% (0.2) | 90.0% | 90 × 0.2 = 18.0 |
| Midterm Exam | 30% (0.3) | 80.0% | 80 × 0.3 = 24.0 |
| Final Exam | 50% (0.5) | 86.0% | 86 × 0.5 = 43.0 |
| Total | 100% | — | 18.0 + 24.0 + 43.0 = 85.0% |
