How Cumulative GPA is Calculated
Cumulative GPA is a weighted average where course credits act as the weights. Quality points are computed for each term by multiplying Semester GPA by Semester Credits. The sum of all quality points (prior + semesters) is then divided by the total credits earned. Formula: Cumulative GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credits.
Step-by-step Cumulative GPA Example
Suppose you had a prior academic history of 60 credits with a 3.40 GPA, and this semester you earned 15 credits with a 3.80 GPA. The math works as follows:
- Prior Quality Points = 3.40 × 60 = 204.0
- Semester Quality Points = 3.80 × 15 = 57.0
- Total Quality Points = 204.0 + 57.0 = 261.0
- Total Credits = 60 + 15 = 75
- Cumulative GPA = 261.0 ÷ 75 = 3.48
